The Waorani Tribe

In this essay I will be explaining the life of the people in the Waorani Tribe, and how they live. I will write about how they survive using plants and animals in the rainforest.

When the Waorani Tribe hunt, they use different methods; most of the materials used for weapons come from things they find in the forests. They make blowpipes from wood, hollow it out and then make small spears for them from other plants; the poison they use is a combination of materials from the forest such as the inside liquid of trees and use piranha teeth to weaken the spear in certain points so that it snaps when the animal tries to pull it out, the poisoned end remains in the animal.

Boys start hunting at a young age, at first they use their father’s blowpipes, and it’s the men’s job to hunt, whilst the women stay at home and cook or make fishing nets. Their methods for catching animals are very clever and well thought up.

The Waorani Tribe’s family life is that they have very full houses, there can be up to 18 people per house, and there are no separate rooms. All stories and knowledge are passed down the generations by word of mouth. The men and women have separate, and together they manage everything.

Weapons used are those such as blowpipes, with poison from trees, spears made from metal if they can find some from materials left behind and piranha teeth used for the formations of spears.

There are many types of animal in the rainforest; there are woolly monkeys, many species of bird, eagles that are used to protect them against strangers, there are jaguars, peccaries (wild pigs), Curacao (wild chickens), cassava/manioc (a potato from underground).

Plants of the Rainforest have many different uses, they can be used to eat, feed animals, or play a part in making weapons used for hunting. Also, some parts of the rainforest are cut down, clearings are made. In these clearings the women grow the crops, eventually these will grow back.

The Waorani tribe are nomadic, this means that they don’t stay in one place, they constantly move around. They set up a place to live then move on when the land becomes dry.

To Conclude I can say that the Waorani Tribe are resourceful and survive simply by using what they can find in the Rainforest, and use the skills that have been passed down through the generations.

If the rainforest was destroyed or cut down, the Waorani Tribe would have no way to live, everything they use to survive is from the Rainforest; they couldn’t find any other way for their resources.
